Established originally in 1896 as Nanyang College in Shanghai before relocating and taking its permanent roots in Xi'an in 1956 through China's historic 'Westward Relocation' (西迁精神), Xi'an Jiaotong University (XJTU) is a premier, world-class comprehensive public research university directly under the administration of China's Ministry of Education. XJTU is a founding and core member of China's elite C9 League (frequently recognized as China's Ivy League), National Project 985, Project 211, and the Double First Class University Plan (Class A Discipline Designation). Xi'an Jiaotong University is globally celebrated as a national powerhouse in engineering, electrical automation, energy systems, power machinery, materials science, advanced manufacturing, artificial intelligence, management science, and clinical medicine. Operating across 11 major disciplinary branches—including science, engineering, medicine, economics, management, humanities, law, philosophy, art, education, and interdisciplinary studies—XJTU serves over 54,000 students, including nearly 4,000 international students from more than 130 countries and regions. In 2013, XJTU was designated by the Ministry of Education as a Demonstration Base for International Education, and in 2024 achieved the highest rating of Class A+ in the national re-certification of international higher education. In 2015, XJTU established the University Alliance of the Silk Road (UASR), bringing together more than 150 elite universities from 38 countries to foster cross-border academic collaboration. With the opening of the massive Western China Science and Technology Innovation Harbour (iHarbour), an integrated smart campus encompassing 26 research institutes and 8 platform centers, XJTU stands at the forefront of internationalized research, global industry partnerships, and advanced technological innovation.
