About Volda University College
Established in 1895 (initially founded as Volda Teachers' College / Volda lærarskule by Henrik Kaarstad and reorganized into a modern state university college in 1994), Volda University College (Høgskulen i Volda - HVO) is one of Norway's most distinguished public higher education institutions. Situated in the breathtaking fjord landscape of Sunnmøre, Western Norway, HVO accommodates over 4,500 students—including more than 350 international students from over 40 countries—supported by 350 faculty and research personnel. The university college is nationally and internationally renowned as Norway's premier cradle for journalism, media production, animation, and documentary filmmaking through its pioneering Faculty of Media and Journalism. Operating across 4 dynamic faculties (Faculty of Media and Journalism, Faculty of Humanities and Education, Faculty of Social Sciences and History, and Faculty of Arts and Physical Education), HVO blends rich traditional pedagogy with state-of-the-art 4K broadcast television studios, radio suites, stop-motion and digital animation labs, and the innovative Læringsverkstaden makerspace. With deep community integration, highly collaborative class sizes, guaranteed student housing through SiVolda, and vibrant cultural landmarks such as Student House Rokken and the Norwegian Animation Festival, Volda offers a uniquely close-knit and inspiring Scandinavian academic environment.
