About Utrecht University
Founded on March 26, 1636, Utrecht University (Universiteit Utrecht — UU) is one of the oldest, largest, and most prestigious research universities in Europe. Bearing the historic Latin motto "Sol Iustitiae Illustra Nos" (Sun of Justice, shine upon us), the university consistently ranks among the top institutions globally, frequently recognized as the #1 university in the Netherlands by the Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU Shanghai: #55 worldwide). Utrecht educates over 39,000 students across seven distinguished faculties: Faculty of Science, Faculty of Geosciences, Faculty of Humanities, Faculty of Law, Economics and Governance, Faculty of Social and Behavioural Sciences, Faculty of Medicine (UMC Utrecht), and Faculty of Veterinary Medicine. As a founding member of the League of European Research Universities (LERU) and the Coimbra Group, Utrecht University is internationally celebrated for pioneering research in sustainability (Copernicus Institute), climate physics (IMAU), life sciences and molecular medicine, artificial intelligence, and liberal arts education (University College Utrecht). The university spans two primary campus hubs in Utrecht: the modern Utrecht Science Park (De Uithof), which hosts cutting-edge STEM and biomedical research facilities, and the atmospheric Utrecht City Centre Campus, nestled along medieval canals around the iconic Dom Tower.
