The University of Tasmania (UTAS) is a prestigious public research university founded in 1890 in Hobart, making it the fourth-oldest university in Australia and one of the nation's original "sandstone" universities. As the sole university in the island state of Tasmania, UTAS maintains deep integration with state industry, natural ecosystems, and international polar expeditions. It is globally renowned for marine, ocean, and Antarctic science via the Institute for Marine and Antarctic Studies (IMAS), maritime engineering and naval architecture through the Australian Maritime College (AMC) in Launceston, agriculture and forestry at the Tasmanian Institute of Agriculture (TIA), climate science and environmental law, and medical research at the Menzies Institute for Medical Research.
