About The University of Mississippi
The University of Mississippi (colloquially known as Ole Miss) is a premier public research university located in Oxford, Mississippi. Chartered in 1844 and opening its doors to inaugural students in 1848, it is the state of Mississippi's oldest public university and flagship institution. Classified among "R1: Doctoral Universities – Very High Research Activity" by the Carnegie Foundation, Ole Miss balances cutting-edge research productivity with Southern tradition, powerhouse NCAA Division I athletics in the Southeastern Conference (SEC), and top-ranked professional and honors colleges. Spanning over 1,200 oak-shaded acres in the historic college town of Oxford, the university is centered around iconic landmarks such as The Lyceum—an 1848 Greek Revival building that served as a hospital during the Civil War—and The Grove, a 10-acre park renowned nationwide for college football tailgating. The university was the epicenter of a pivotal civil rights milestone in 1962 when James Meredith integrated the institution, an event commemorated by a statue near the Lyceum. Oxford is also celebrated as the literary home of Nobel laureate William Faulkner, whose historic estate, Rowan Oak, is maintained by the university. Academically, Ole Miss comprises 15 distinct schools and academic divisions. It is globally recognized for the Patterson School of Accountancy (regularly ranked in the top 10 nationally), the Sally McDonnell Barksdale Honors College (SMBHC), the School of Pharmacy and its federally designated National Center for Natural Products Research (NCNPR), the School of Law (founded in 1854 with pioneering Center for Air and Space Law), the Croft Institute for International Studies, and the Center for the Study of Southern Culture.
