About University of Florence
Founded in 1321 by the Republic of Florence and officially recognized by Pope Clement VI in 1349, the University of Florence (Università degli Studi di Firenze - UniFI) is one of Italy's most historic, prestigious, and comprehensive public research universities. Educating over 51,000 enrolled students and hosting nearly 3,500 academic and research faculty across 10 specialized Schools and 21 departments, UniFI stands at the intellectual, cultural, and scientific epicentre of Tuscany. Florence was the birthplace of the Italian Renaissance, and UniFI's intellectual heritage is entwined with historical giants such as Giovanni Boccaccio, who lectured on Dante's Divine Comedy at the Studium Generale, Galileo Galilei, who taught mathematics in Florence, and renowned modern scholars including Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte, legal philosopher Piero Calamandrei, and Nobel Laureates in Physiology and Medicine. Today, UniFI is an internationally acclaimed research institution, a key founding member of the European University for Well-Being (EUniWell) alliance, and a leading global hub for Art History, Architecture, Renaissance Studies, Clinical Medicine, Agricultural Innovation, and Quantum Sciences.
