About University of Canterbury
Established in 1873 by scholars from Oxford and Cambridge as Canterbury College, the University of Canterbury (Māori: Te Whare Wānanga o Waitaha) is New Zealand's second-oldest university and a globally distinguished public research institution. Nestled within a picturesque 76-hectare parkland campus in Ilam, Christchurch, surrounded by the clear waters of the Ōtākaro Avon River and framed by the Southern Alps, UC has educated titans of science and industry, including Nobel Laureate Lord Ernest Rutherford. UC's Faculty of Engineering is ranked among the top 1% of engineering schools worldwide, holding premier global rankings in Civil and Structural Engineering, Software Engineering, and Mechatronics. Its Triple-Crown accredited UC Business School (AACSB, AMBA, EQUIS) and world-class science faculties provide cutting-edge laboratories—such as the $220M Ernest Rutherford Science Centre and the Beatrice Tinsley Building. With over 22,000 students from more than 100 nations, UC combines rigorous academic heritage, thriving tech industry partnerships across Christchurch's innovation corridor, and an adventurous South Island lifestyle.
