About Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (UMT)
Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (UMT) is Malaysia's premier specialized public research university dedicated to oceanography, marine biology, aquatic resource science, naval architecture, and maritime logistics. Tracing its lineage back to 1979 as the Fisheries and Marine Science Center of Universiti Pertanian Malaysia (UPM), the institution evolved into Kolej Universiti Sains dan Teknologi Malaysia (KUSTEM) in 2001 and was chartered as an autonomous full public university on 1 February 2007. Situated on a scenic coastal campus facing the South China Sea in Mengabang Telipot, Kuala Nerus, UMT commands world-class marine research assets including the 40-meter oceanographic research vessel RV Discovery, the renowned Pulau Bidong Marine Research Station, and the Lake Kenyir Freshwater Ecosystem Station. Ranked #195 in the QS Asia University Rankings and #801–850 globally in the QS World University Rankings 2026, UMT hosts two Ministry of Higher Education Higher Institution Centres of Excellence (HICoE)—the Institute of Oceanography and Environment (INOS) and the Institute of Tropical Aquaculture and Fisheries (AKUATROP). With over 12,000 undergraduate and postgraduate students from 30+ nations, UMT is recognized as ASEAN's foremost academic maritime epicenter driving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG 14: Life Below Water, SDG 13: Climate Action, and SDG 7: Clean Energy).
