About Université libre de Bruxelles
Founded in 1834 by lawyer Pierre-Théodore Verhaegen and liberal intellectuals, the Université libre de Bruxelles (ULB) is one of Europe’s most storied and prominent public research institutions. Established on the core philosophy of "principe du libre examen" (free inquiry and freedom of thought independent of dogma), ULB has fostered six Nobel Prize laureates (including Jules Bordet, Albert Claude, Christian de Duve, Ilya Prigogine, François Englert, and Denis Mukwege) and a Fields Medalist. Located in Brussels—the diplomatic capital of the European Union—ULB educates over 35,000 students from more than 140 nations. The university comprises 12 faculties across three main campuses: the historic Campus du Solbosch in Ixelles (home to central administration, the triple-accredited Solvay Brussels School of Economics and Management - SBS-EM, and the École polytechnique de Bruxelles - EPB), the Campus de la Plaine (science, computing, and pharmaceutical innovation), and the Campus Érasme in Anderlecht (a powerhouse of medicine and public health anchored by the 850-bed Hôpital Érasme). ULB is a founding member of the CIVIS European Civic University Alliance, connecting students directly to top European research networks.
