About The University of Electro-Communications
The University of Electro-Communications (電気通信大学 - Denki Tsūshin Daigaku / UEC Tokyo / 電通大), located in Chofu, Tokyo, is one of Japan’s premier national universities dedicated exclusively to science, technology, informatics, and engineering. Founded in 1918 by the Wireless Association as the Wireless Telegraphy Research Institute (無線電信講習所) and incorporated into the national university system in 1949, UEC has evolved into a global center of excellence in computer science, wireless communications, cyber security, robotics, quantum electronics, optics and laser science, and artificial intelligence. UEC is organized into the Faculty of Informatics and Engineering (情報理工学域) at the undergraduate level—comprising Cluster I (Informatics and Computer Science), Cluster II (Emerging Design and Informatics), and Cluster III (Fundamental Science and Engineering)—and the Graduate School of Informatics and Engineering (大学院情報理工学研究科) encompassing four major departments: Informatics, Computer and Network Engineering, Mechanical and Intelligent Systems Engineering, and Engineering Science. In addition, UEC offers the Joint Doctoral Program for Sustainability Research with TUFS and TUAT, alongside the Special Graduate Program in Informatics and Engineering, providing English-medium research tracks and international degree supervision. Home to world-class research hubs including the Institute for Laser Science (ILS), Advanced Wireless Communications Research Center (AWCC), and Artificial Intelligence eXploration Research Center (AIX), UEC Tokyo maintains strong corporate synergies with Tokyo’s tech giants (NTT, Fujitsu, Sony, NEC, Hitachi) and consistently ranks among Japan’s top institutions for graduate employability and research commercialization.
