About The National Film School of Denmark
The National Film School of Denmark (Den Danske Filmskole - DDF) is Denmark’s premier state institution for higher cinematic education, widely celebrated as one of the most distinguished, selective, and influential film academies in global cinema. Founded in 1966 by the Danish Film Institute under the visionary leadership of documentary pioneer Theodor Christensen and film theorist Jens Christian Lauritzen, the school operates directly under the Danish Ministry of Culture (Kulturministeriet). Situated on Frederiksholm in the historic maritime quarter of Holmen in central Copenhagen—alongside the Danish National School of Performing Arts and the Royal Danish Academy—Filmskolen delivers intensive, practical, 4-year conservatoire education designed to forge complete auteur filmmakers, master technicians, and innovative storytellers. The school admits only a micro-cohort of approximately 6 students per specialization every other year, selected purely on individual artistic originality and creative instinct through an exhaustive multi-stage entrance examination. Den Danske Filmskole’s alumni have profoundly transformed modern European and world cinema, including Palme d’Or winners and Academy Award laureates Lars von Trier, Thomas Vinterberg, Susanne Bier, and Bille August, BAFTA-nominee Lone Scherfig, and European Film Award winner Per Fly. The institution was the crucible of the revolutionary Dogme 95 movement and continues to set the benchmark for European fiction directing, documentary storytelling, cinematography, sound design, editing, and interactive media.
