About Sichuan University
Sichuan University (四川大学 / SCU), located in Chengdu, the historic cultural capital of southwestern China and home of the Giant Panda, is one of China's top national comprehensive research universities. Directly administered by the Ministry of Education of China, Sichuan University is designated under China's elite "Double First-Class" Class A initiative and was a charter member of Project 985 and Project 211. Originating in 1896 as the Sichuan Chinese and Western School (四川中西学堂) established by Governor Lu Chuanlin under the Guangxu Emperor, the modern university represents the historic amalgamation of three premier institutions: the original Sichuan University, Chengdu University of Science and Technology, and the venerable West China University of Medical Sciences (华西医科大学, founded in 1910 by British, American, and Canadian medical pioneers). Sichuan University operates across three prominent campus complexes in Chengdu: the historic Wangjiang Campus (望江校区) spanning 200 hectares along the scenic Jinjiang River downtown; the venerable Huaxi Campus (华西校区) characterized by early 20th-century Chinese-Western fusion grey-brick architecture, the historic Bell Tower, and the world-renowned West China Medical Center; and the expansive modern Jiangan Campus (江安校区) covering 200 hectares in Shuangliu featuring Mingyuan Lake, Baihuahong Bridge, and modern high-tech research quads. SCU is internationally acclaimed for its West China School of Stomatology (ranked #1 in China and considered the cradle of modern Chinese dentistry), West China Hospital (consistently ranked among the top 2 clinical medicine centers in China), Polymer Science and Engineering (National State Key Laboratory), Hydraulics and Mountain River Development, Chemistry, Computer Science, and History. Hosting over 3,400 international scholars, SCU offers comprehensive scholarships under the Chinese Government Scholarship (CSC Agency No. 10610), Sichuan Provincial Government Scholarship, and the Chengdu "Belt and Road" Sister Cities Scholarship.
