About Sapienza University of Rome
Founded in 1303 by Pope Boniface VIII through the papal bull 'In Supremae praeminentia Dignitatis', Sapienza University of Rome (Sapienza Università di Roma) is one of the oldest universities in the world, the largest university in Europe by student enrollment, and Italy's premier public research institution. With over 115,000 enrolled students and 4,000 dedicated academic faculty across 11 distinguished faculties and 63 departments, Sapienza represents an epicentre of European intellectual tradition and scientific discovery. Ranked #1 in Italy by ARWU Shanghai Rankings and Center for World University Rankings (CWUR), and consecutively ranked #1 IN THE WORLD for Classics and Ancient History by the QS World University Rankings, Sapienza boasts an extraordinary alumni and academic lineage including Nobel laureates Enrico Fermi, Emilio Segrè, and Giorgio Parisi (Physics 2021), as well as prominent statesmen, architects, and European innovators. Sapienza offers more than 311 accredited bachelor's, single-cycle, and master's degree programs—with over 70 degrees taught entirely in English—spanning Engineering, Artificial Intelligence, Medicine & Surgery, Architecture, Classics, Economics, Physics, and Nanotechnology. Anchored by the monumental rationalist Città Universitaria campus designed by Marcello Piacentini and historic faculties across Rome, Sapienza is a founding member of the prestigious CIVIS European Civic University Alliance.
