About Royal Danish Academy
The Royal Danish Academy – Architecture, Design, Conservation (Det Kongelige Akademi), founded in 1754 by King Frederik V, is one of the world’s most prestigious higher education institutions in architecture, spatial practice, product design, and cultural heritage conservation. Based on the historic naval island of Holmen on Frederiksholm in central Copenhagen, with a specialized Crafts campus in Nexø on the island of Bornholm, the Academy unites historic Scandinavian craft traditions with cutting-edge scientific research, digital fabrication, and progressive ecological design thinking. The institution comprises three world-renowned schools: the School of Architecture (Arkitektskolen, which shaped Danish Modern luminaries such as Arne Jacobsen, Jørn Utzon, Henning Larsen, and Bjarke Ingels), the School of Design (Danmarks Designskole), and the School of Conservation (Konservatorskolen). Operating in award-winning industrial conversions including the Klejnsmedjen Library and Modelsamlingsbygningen prototyping halls, the Academy attracts visionary thinkers from over 65 countries. Programs address planetary crises through architectural technology, extreme environments research, circular furniture design, visual communication, and the scientific preservation of historic artifacts.
