The Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology Graduate University (OIST - 沖縄科学技術大学院大学), incorporated in November 2011 following a special national initiative spearheaded by the Japanese Cabinet Office (内閣府) and founding architect Minister Koji Omi, is an elite, international graduate research university situated along the subtropical coast of Onna Village in Okinawa, Japan. Purpose-built from inception to dismantle traditional academic silos, OIST operates with a singular department-less structure: the Graduate School of Science and Technology, offering a premier 5-year integrated Ph.D. program conducted entirely in English. OIST brings together world-class faculty and doctoral scholars from more than 50 countries (over 80% of faculty and students hail from outside Japan), creating one of the most culturally diverse and scientifically ambitious research environments in the world.
