About Newman University
Birmingham Newman University (legally Newman University) is a distinguished, values-driven public university located in the tranquil suburb of Bartley Green, South West Birmingham. Founded in 1968 as Newman College of Higher Education and named after the renowned 19th-century theologian and philosopher Saint John Henry Newman (author of 'The Idea of a University'), the institution was granted full university status by the Privy Council in 2013 and officially adopted the trading name Birmingham Newman University in 2023. Newman is celebrated for its warm, supportive, and inclusive educational ethos, where students are known by name rather than number. The university operates from a modern, consolidated, single-site campus set in landscaped parkland overlooking Bartley Reservoir. Over £20 million has been invested in campus infrastructure, delivering the modern Newman Library, the St Chad and Edwards teaching complexes, dedicated mock clinical suites, sports science testing laboratories, and 'The Globe'—a contemporary dining and student social pavilion. Renowned across the UK for teacher training (Initial Teacher Education with QTS), Birmingham Newman University has also built nationally recognized strengths in applied psychology, mental health and counselling, criminology, law, business management, computer science, and speech and language therapy. Students benefit from mandatory work-related learning embedded in undergraduate programs, ensuring outstanding graduate employability across the West Midlands and beyond.
