About Nagasaki University
Nagasaki University (長崎大学 - Nagasaki Daigaku, affectionately known across Japan as "Chodai") is a prestigious national public flagship research university located in the historic harbor city of Nagasaki, Kyushu. Established as a comprehensive national university in 1949, its illustrious academic heritage dates back to 1857, when Dutch naval physician J. L. C. Pompe van Meerdervoort established Japan's first Western-style medical training school (Igaku Denshusho) on the historic island of Dejima. Today, Nagasaki University is globally celebrated as a premier international hub for Tropical Medicine, Infectious Diseases, Global Health, Radiation Medical Sciences, and Ocean and Environmental Sciences. The university operates across three distinctive, specialized campuses in Nagasaki City: the flagship Bunkyo Campus (文教キャンパス), home to the university headquarters, central library, and seven faculties including Global Humanities, Engineering, Fisheries, and Data Sciences; the historic Sakamoto Campus (坂本キャンパス), housing the School of Medicine, School of Dentistry, University Hospital, the world-renowned Institute of Tropical Medicine (NEKKEN - 熱研), and the pioneering School of Tropical Medicine and Global Health (TMGH); and the Katabuchi Campus (片淵キャンパス), dedicated to the century-old Faculty of Economics. For international students, Nagasaki University provides distinguished English-taught graduate programs, prominently headlined by the School of Tropical Medicine and Global Health (TMGH)—offering an English Master of Public Health (MPH), an MSc in Tropical Medicine, an MSc in International Health Development, and an elite Joint Ph.D. program with the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine (LSHTM). With statutory national tuition fees of only ¥535,800/year, generous MEXT scholarships, affordable on-campus international residences (¥15,000–¥25,000/month), and an exceptional 98.4% graduate employment rate, Nagasaki University offers an inspiring gateway to world-class research and global careers.
