About Latvia University of Life Sciences and Technologies
The Latvia University of Life Sciences and Technologies (Latvijas Biozinātņu un tehnoloģiju universitāte - LBTU, historically renowned as the Latvia University of Agriculture / LLU), established as an autonomous higher education and research institution in 1939, is Latvia’s sole specialized national university dedicated to the bioeconomy, veterinary medicine, agricultural sciences, food technology, forestry, and sustainable technologies. Headquartered in the magnificent 18th-century Baroque Jelgava Palace (Jelgavas pils)—designed by the legendary architect Francesco Bartolomeo Rastrelli as the former residence of the Dukes of Courland and Semigallia—LBTU is situated on an expansive parkland campus along the Lielupe River in Jelgava, just 40 km southwest of Riga. Accredited by the European Association of Establishments for Veterinary Education (EAEVE) and the Latvian Higher Education Quality Agency (AIKA/AIC), LBTU educates over 4,000 students across undergraduate, integrated professional clinical (6-year Veterinary Medicine), postgraduate, and doctoral levels. The university serves as the national academic pillar for the EU Green Deal and circular bioeconomy, maintaining key partnerships in the NOVA-BOVA Nordic-Baltic University Network, the EU European University Alliance (ChallengeEU), and Erasmus+, providing world-class hands-on clinical and laboratory instruction in veterinary medicine, food pilot plants, smart biosystems robotics, and sustainable environmental engineering.
