About Kookmin University
Kookmin University (국민대학교 / KMU) is a prestigious private comprehensive research university located in Seongbuk-gu, northern Seoul, South Korea. Established in 1946 by prominent statesmen of the Provisional Government of the Republic of Korea—including Kim Koo, Shin Ik-hee, and Cho So-ang—it holds monumental historical significance as the first national private university founded following Korea’s liberation from colonial rule. In 1959, the university was acquired by the Sungkok Foundation (associated with the SsangYong Group), which spearheaded systemic modernization, financial endowment growth, and world-class faculty recruitment. Today, Kookmin University commands preeminent national standing for operating South Korea’s undisputed #1 College of Automotive Engineering and Graduate School of Automobile and Mobility, its elite College of Design and Graduate School of Techno Design (TED), government-designated Software-Oriented University initiatives in software and artificial intelligence convergence, and the fully English-taught Kookmin International Business School (KIBS). Nestled on a scenic, nature-integrated hillside campus framed by the majestic peaks of Bukhansan National Park, the campus features the 15-story Bugak Hall, Sungkok Memorial Library (housing over 1.3 million volumes), state-of-the-art automotive wind-tunnel test facilities, clay modeling ateliers, software innovation laboratories, the historic Myungwon Folk House traditional Korean heritage estate, and modern on-campus student residences with rapid shuttle connections to Seoul Subway Line 4 and the Ui-Sinseol LRT Line.
