About Kagoshima University
Kagoshima University (鹿児島大学 - Kagoshima Daigaku, colloquially known as Kadai - 鹿大), tracing its historic lineage back to 1773 with the establishment of the Satsuma Domain’s Confucian academy Zoushikan (造士館) and chartered as a comprehensive national university under the National School Establishment Law in 1949, is the premier national research university in southern Kyushu, Japan. Situated in Kagoshima City against the dramatic backdrop of Mount Sakurajima—one of the world’s most active stratovolcanoes—and overlooking the rich marine biodiversity of Kinko Bay and the East China Sea, Kagoshima University operates across three vibrant urban and coastal campuses: Korimoto (flagship main campus), Sakuragaoka (medical and dental center), and Shimoarata (marine science and fisheries campus). The university comprises 9 undergraduate faculties and 7 graduate schools, educating over 9,000 undergraduate and graduate scholars, including more than 350 international students from over 40 nations. Globally celebrated for its world-class research centers in active volcanology, geothermal energy, sub-tropical island biogeography, Kurobuta bioresource genetics, and marine fisheries science, Kagoshima University operates two oceanographic research vessels—the 935-ton international training ship Kagoshima-maru and the Nansei-maru. It is also the host institution of the prestigious United Graduate School of Agricultural Sciences (UGSAS) consortium and the Joint Faculty of Veterinary Medicine with Yamaguchi University. Steeped in the spirit of "Self-Discipline and Enterprising Spirit" (自主自律と進取の気風), Kadai provides rich, fully funded government scholarships, complete national tuition fee exemption systems, and bilingual academic tracks for global scholars.
