About Jāzeps Vītols Latvian Academy of Music
The Jāzeps Vītols Latvian Academy of Music (Jāzepa Vītola Latvijas Mūzikas akadēmija - JVLMA, historically known as the Latvian Conservatoire), founded in 1919 by legendary composer and professor Jāzeps Vītols (a disciple of Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov and professor at the Saint Petersburg Conservatory), is the oldest, most prestigious, and foremost national higher education institution for music, performing arts, and choreography in the Baltic region. Situated in a historic neoclassical landmark building constructed in 1873–1875 by renowned architect Jānis Frīdrihs Baumanis at Krišjāņa Barona iela 1 in the heart of Riga, JVLMA is globally celebrated for cultivating world-renowned virtuosos, conductors, opera soloists, and composers—including Mariss Jansons, Andris Nelsons, Gidon Kremer, Maija Kovaļevska, and Pēteris Vasks. Operating fully under European Bologna Process standards with ECTS credits and accredited by the Quality Agency for Higher Education (AIKA / AIC), JVLMA offers elite professional Bachelor’s, Master’s, and Doctoral degrees (both Academic PhD in Musicology and Practice-based Professional Doctorate in Music & Performing Arts). The Academy maintains active consortium memberships in the Association Européenne des Conservatoires (AEC), the Nordplus Music Network, and Erasmus+, offering students individual masterclass instruction from Europe’s finest virtuosos, residencies with the Latvian National Symphony Orchestra and Latvian National Opera, and rich performance stages in its legendary Great Hall (Lielā zāle).
