About Gustav Mahler Private University for Music (Gustav Mahler Privatuniversität für Musik — GMPU)
The Gustav Mahler Private University for Music (Gustav Mahler Privatuniversität für Musik — GMPU), accredited in 2019 and carrying forward nearly a century of renowned musical excellence formerly established as the Kärntner Landeskonservatorium, is Austria’s newest accredited private music university. Situated inside the historic Konzerthaus Klagenfurt in Carinthia, GMPU accommodates an intimate community of around 300 talented students, providing exceptional teacher-to-student ratios and personalized master-level mentoring. Named after the visionary composer Gustav Mahler—who composed several of his greatest symphonies on the shores of Lake Wörthersee—the university delivers internationally accredited degrees across two core pillars: Musical Performance Art (Musikalische Aufführungskunst / MAK) and Instrumental and Vocal Pedagogy (Instrumental- und Gesangspädagogik / IGP), spanning Classical, Jazz, Pop, and Folk Music, alongside a pioneering third-cycle PhD in the Arts (Artistic Research). Benefiting from substantial regional public subvention by the State Government of Carinthia (Land Kärnten), GMPU offers highly accessible statutory tuition fees while maintaining world-class conservatory artistic standards.
