About Bishop's University
Founded in 1843 by the Right Reverend George Jehoshaphat Mountain and receiving a Royal Charter from Queen Victoria in 1853, Bishop's University is a prestigious, predominantly undergraduate English-language liberal arts and sciences institution situated in the bilingual community of Lennoxville (borough of Sherbrooke) in Quebec's picturesque Eastern Townships (Cantons-de-l'Est). Spanning 550 acres of rolling green countryside nestled between the Massawippi and St. Francis rivers, Bishop's is one of Canada's oldest universities and a proud founding member of the Maple League of Universities. Renowned for its intimate residential collegiate experience, the university maintains an exceptional 19:1 student-to-faculty ratio and an average class size of just 34 students, fostering deep mentorship and active experiential learning. With approximately 3,000 students representing over 80 countries, Bishop's offers nationally recognized degrees across the Williams School of Business, School of Education, Division of Humanities, Division of Natural Sciences and Mathematics, and Division of Social Sciences. The university is celebrated for its Purple Gaiters athletic pride, historic 19th-century Collegiate Gothic architecture (including McGreer Hall and St. Mark's Chapel), and its unique status as an English-language cultural oasis in Quebec exempt from provincial out-of-province tuition hikes.
