About Barratt Due Institute of Music
The Barratt Due Institute of Music (Barratt Due musikkinstitutt / Høyskolen Barratt Due), founded in 1927 by pianist Mary Barratt Due and violinist Henrik Adam Due, is one of Scandinavia’s most prestigious and world-renowned classical music conservatories. Located in an elegant historic villa at Lyder Sagens gate in the historic Fagerborg district of Oslo, the institute operates under the enduring philosophy "Fra musikkbarnehage til konsertsal" ("From music kindergarten to concert hall"). Its higher education division, Høyskolen Barratt Due, delivers NOKUT-accredited professional degree programs including the 4-year Bachelor in Music Performance (Instrumental and Vocal Studies) and the 2-year Master in Music Performance (run in formal joint partnership with the Norwegian Academy of Music / Norges musikkhøgskole). Renowned globally for producing world-class virtuosos, soloists, and orchestral leaders—including international violin star Vilde Frang, Henning Kraggerud, Eldbjørg Hemsing, Ragnhild Hemsing, and Eurovision winner Alexander Rybak—Barratt Due maintains exceptionally selective, intimate cohort sizes where students receive intensive one-on-one mentorship from premier Nordic professors, concert soloists, and guest artists. Students collaborate closely with the Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra, the Norwegian Chamber Orchestra (Det Norske Kammerorkester), and the Norwegian Opera and Ballet, alongside performing in the institute’s celebrated Oslo Camerata chamber orchestra.
