About Art Academy of Latvia
The Art Academy of Latvia (Latvijas Mākslas akadēmija, globally abbreviated as LMA or AAL), founded in 1919 alongside the Republic of Latvia by the celebrated landscape master and cultural visionary Vilhelms Purvītis, is the Baltic region’s premier, oldest, and most prestigious public university dedicated to visual arts, design, audio-visual media, and art theory. Operating out of its iconic Neo-Gothic red-brick masterpiece designed by architect Wilhelm Bokslaff on Kalpaka Boulevard in the heart of Riga’s park ring, as well as the cutting-edge creative quarter “Needle Factory” (Adatu fabrika) in UNESCO-listed Kuldīga, LMA is a vital creative vanguard of European cultural heritage and contemporary artistic experimentation. LMA is a founding member of the prestigious EU4ART European Art University Alliance (alongside Hungarian University of Fine Arts, Academy of Fine Arts of Rome, and Dresden Academy of Fine Arts) and coordinator of the world-acclaimed Erasmus Mundus Joint Master’s Programme in Service Design Strategies and Innovations (SDSI) delivered in partnership with the University of Lapland and the Estonian Academy of Arts. Comprising 5 dynamic faculties—Faculty of Visual Arts, Faculty of Visual Plastic Arts, Faculty of Design, Faculty of Audio-Visual Media Art, and Faculty of Art History and Theory—as well as the Joint Doctoral School offering both Ph.D. and practice-based professional doctorates, the academy educates approximately 800 to 1,000 elite artists, designers, scenographers, and curators. With specialized prototyping infrastructure at Riga Makerspace, experimental exhibitions at LMA Art Space PILOT in Old Riga, full Erasmus+ and Nordplus (KUNO, CIRRUS) international mobility, and generous Latvian State Scholarships, LMA stands as an internationally renowned incubator of artistic distinction, cultural thought, and design leadership across Northern and Central Europe.
