About Academy of Fine Arts Vienna
Founded in 1692 by court painter Peter Strudel under Emperor Leopold I and refounded in 1725 as the k.k. Hofakademie der Maler, Bildhauer und Baukunst under Empress Maria Theresa, the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna (Akademie der bildenden Künste Wien) is one of the oldest and most influential higher art education institutions in Europe. Situated in the heart of Vienna, the Academy is centered around its magnificent neo-Renaissance flagship palace on Schillerplatz, masterfully designed by Danish-Austrian architect Theophil Hansen and extensively modernized in 2021. For over three centuries, Akbild has stood at the avant-garde of international fine arts, architecture, theory, and cultural discourse, shaping luminaries such as Otto Wagner, Egon Schiele, Richard Neutra, and Friedensreich Hundertwasser. Today, the Academy educates approximately 1,500 students from more than 60 nations, maintaining an intimate master-class and studio community across five world-class faculties and institutes: the Institute for Fine Arts, the Institute for Art and Architecture (IKA), the Institute for Conservation and Restoration, the Institute for Education in the Arts (IKL), and the Institute for Art Theory and Cultural Studies (IKW). With its historic Gemäldegalerie (housing Hieronymus Bosch’s world-famous Last Judgment Triptych), the Graphic Collection, the monumental Glyptothek cast collection, the multi-tiered Semperdepot studio complex, and groundbreaking English-taught graduate programs including the Master in Critical Studies and the PhD-in-Practice, the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna bridges cutting-edge critical theory with daring studio experimentation under the Austrian public university system.
