Programme structure

The Master’s degree is completed in two years (four semesters) and it consists of coursework and a research thesis.  During the first three semesters the focus of attention is on deepening  the knowledge through course work.  It includes lectures, independent reading and  seminars in the stimulating environment of a whole range of core courses (54 credits), e.g.,  Literature and society, Discourse analysis and critical discourse analysis studies, Foreign language acquisition - theory and practice, Research methodologies and other courses as well as elective courses (33 credits), e.g., Literature and media, Postcolonial novel, Syntax, Introduction to computational linguistics and other courses. In addition to course work, an elective internship (3 credits) is available during the third semester.  The fourth semester is devoted to writing the research thesis (30 credits) in the selected area  of interest. Since you’re from Bangladesh and planning full-time academic study in Latvia, yes, you’ll definitely need a long-term (Type D) student visa and a residence permit for studies.

Check the deadlines.

The visa process can take several weeks, sometimes 6–8 weeks or more.
Missing a step or delaying your appointment could mean missing the start of your semester — not the kind of plot twist you want.

Go on a paperwork treasure hunt.

Make sure you have all the essentials, such as:

• Valid passport

• Acceptance letter from a Latvian university

• Completed visa application form

• Passport-size photos

• Proof of accommodation in Latvia

• Proof of financial support

• Academic transcripts and certificates

• Language test results (English or Latvian, depending on your programme)

• Health insurance (and possibly a medical certificate or police clearance)

• Motivation letter or interview confirmation (if required)

Start saving up.

You’ll need to prove you can support yourself financially during your stay.
This includes tuition (if applicable), living expenses, visa fees, and your day-to-day needs.

Boost your English or Latvian skills.

Many programmes are in English, but having some knowledge of Latvian helps a lot — especially with daily life, paperwork, and making local connections.

Strong language skills are also helpful for any interviews or written statements.
